These are those stories, told the way a friend tells them: no dates to memorize, no names you’re supposed to already know. For more than two thousand years, every new Chinese dynasty appointed historians to write down the story of the one before it. One continuous record — never interrupted, still being told. Nothing else on Earth comes close.

Schemes, betrayals, impossible comebacks — and yes, love, all playing out in ancient China. Twists a screenwriter would cut for being too much. Every one of them is in the record, because every one of them happened.

The names. Three kings in a row named Ying, a dozen look-alike kingdoms — even native Chinese speakers lose the thread. That’s the wall that kept these stories from you. I grew up inside them, and I retell the ones I love with the wall taken down: nothing to memorize, nothing to look up.
